Problem Cause Remedy

Belt Generally Worn Rough/Worn Sheave Groove Clean, Repair, or Replace Sheave

General Belt Deterioration Belt Dressing DO NOT use belt dressing. Clean or Replace Belts.

Belt Slips Drive under-tensioned Retension.

Belt Slips Sheaves worn Belt bottoming in grooves

Belt Breakage Excessive shock or starting load Check drive design.

Belt Breakage Improper installation. Install new belts.

Belt Jacket Worn Belt Slippage Check & Correct Tension

Belt Jacket Worn Misaligned drive Align shafts & sheaves

Belts Check or Crack Belts slipping Increase tension.

Belts Check or Crack Excessive Heat Provide adequate ventilation. Check Slippage

Belt Flips Over on Pulley Ruptured belt Replace belts

Belt Flips Over on Pulley Badlly located idler Relocate Idler

Belt Sparking Excess Static Electricity Ground shaft. Consult belt specialist.

Belts Wear Rapidly Belt hitting guard or framework. Provide sufficient clearance.

Belts Wear Rapidly Sheaves Worn. Replace or remachine.

Belts Mismatched Belts not of same manufacturer Replace with new set of matched belts.
